What is LTE-M?

LTE-M is the new network for Internet of Things (IoT) applications. LTE-M (LTE Cat-M1 in full) connects objects such as sensors with the internet by means of a radio module. With an IoT application based on LTE-M you will have real-time functionality and you will be able to remotely instruct a specific piece of equipment to perform a certain action.
LTE-M complements the functionalities already available for connectivity via 4G Machine-2-Machine and the LoRa network. LTE-M is able to process data up to 1 Mb per second. In the longer term, a voice connection will also be made available. At the same time, LTE-M is extremely energy-efficient: the life of the required batteries is 5 to 10 years.

Coverage and range

IoT solutions with LTE-M connect directly to a 4G network, without the need for a gateway. LTE-M has good coverage at 800 Mhz. Compared with 4G and 2G, LTE-M has a higher coverage rate, improving the coverage in buildings. In comparison with LoRa, LTE-M has more bandwidth available. This means that, for instance, a speech channel can be supported, and this functionality will be available in the future. LTE-M by KNP is based on the global 3GPP standard of the GSMA, which offers roaming options.

Energy-efficient

The power supply of the wireless modules which register and communicate via the LTE-M network is provided by batteries. The energy usage of IoT solutions with LTE-M is extremely low. The modules are able to go into deep, energy-efficient hibernation (Power Save Mode) or can, by means of the Extended Discontinuous Reception (eDRX) mode, become active only when the module has to connect with the network in order to send data. The precise life of the batteries is dependent on the amount and frequency of the data being sent, but can reach 5 to 10 years.

LTE-M solutions

LTE-M is complementary to LoRa and current Machine-2-Machine applications. Connectivity via LTE-M is the solution in situations in which a wireless solution is necessary or desirable, but where more data need to be sent and/or received than is possible with LoRa. LTE-M has low latency, i.e. limited delay between sending and receiving data, and is furthermore suitable for mobile applications. This means that LTE-M can provide a wide range of IoT solutions for objects and locations. Examples include a smart energy network (smart grid) in order to avoid peak charge times, fleet management, noise measurements in building projects, chip and pin machines, and the so-called wearables.
